If your home is like mine, you will have many drawers of all shapes and sizes. Isn't it frustrating when they do not open and close properly? Perhaps they open just fine and then the glide in the back falls off and the drawer just falls out! This is a most exasperating experience, especially if you don't really have the know how to fix the problem.
Here are a couple of tips to keep those drawers working fine. Check the back of your drawers and see if they have the plastic glides. Sometimes, even more expensive furniture drawers come with plastic glides that are only attached with a couple of flimsy staples.
Since this is the part of the drawer that keeps it straight within the framework, it's important that it be secured firmly in place. To remedy the problem, use two short screws to better attach the glide to the drawer. Simply drill two holes, one near each end of the glide, the whole way through it. Then insert the screws through the holes and drive them into the wood of the drawer. This will keep the glide tightly in place, and the drawer will stay smoothly on track.
Another track problem relates to older drawers that have the narrow wooden strips along the bottom of the drawer that holds them in place. As time goes by, the screws that hold a strip to the drawer bottom may come loose and ultimately fall out.
Make sure you check the screws occasionally to make sure they are secure. Once the tracks actually come almost all the way loose, they make take a part of the wood with it, making it more difficult to fix them later.
